Rush Down, Roar Gently, by Sara Saab

Interzone, July-August 2015; ~6,100 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story

An old woman hazards crossing a drowning future Beirut to make an apology to an old friend she had wronged thirty years before.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: The story makes the people of Beirut come alive, and even the flooded city feels very real.

Con: Except for the setting, the story isn't SF at all. Aya is rather foolish to believe that Zeina would still live in the same house 30 years later.

In the Queue for the Worldship Munawwer, by Sara Saab

Clarkesworld Magazine, November 2015; 3,998 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story  Recommended By:  Locus SFRevu:4

In 2139 Beiruit, Suraya sends a sequence of e-mails that summarize her team's progress saving as many people in Lebanon as possible from a coming global catastrophe.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: The core story is how Suraya decides to accept her estranged father's gift of life and leave Earth with the ship. Clearly he pulled strings to put his daughter in charge, and she seems to have worked very hard to earn it. She wants him to see the enormity of what it really means to only save two out of five people.

Con: It's a little hard to sympathize with Suraya's situation. She has medical treatment available and a berth on the starship. It seems irrational for her to opt to die.

The coming catastrophe is a little silly. Asteroids from beyond the solar system that just happen to hit the Earth?
