Rockets Red, by Mary Robinette Kowal

[Collection]
★★★★☆ Sweet and Moving

(Punchcard Punk; Lady Astronaut) In 1974, twenty years after Mars was settled, Aaron tries to put on the first Martian fireworks display--despite his mother's attempts to help him. A sweet little story. (2,370 words; Time: 07m)

Review: 2015.246 (A Word for Authors)

Pro: Mom causes the problem and she solves it, but better than that: she builds community in the process. The ending even manages to be moving.

Con: It's a simple, linear story, and the idea of fireworks on Mars is a little silly.

  1. Yup, sweet story. Very nice depiction of an adult child, older parent relationship.

    1. Under the new guidelines, this probably would have been a 4-star story.
