Surfacing, by Marissa Lingen

Lightspeed Magazine, March 2015; 5,977 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story

Mishy returns from an underwater city where she hid from the war for 20 years--but the war isn't over.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: Good narration and dialogue. Story moves along nicely.

Con: Mishy's behavior is a bit hard to believe. She's been gone 20 years and yet she assumes she knows everything about what the army is doing. The undersea people never come into the story, but they're a little hard to believe too--especially the fact that they don't seem to have a clue what was going on on land. Finally, is it really a better idea to start a revolution than to just let a couple of kids go into the army?
