La Héron, by Charlotte Ashley

Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, March/April 2015; 6,544 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story

In France in 1699, a magical fighter comes to Caen to duel with creatures from faery.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: The bouts are nicely described, and the magical element keeps them from being dull.

Con: La Héron is rather unlikable and something of a "Mary Sue." Alex is slightly more likable, but she's too helpless to really be the protagonist.
