In this gruesome fantasy, Vendanj submits to months of cruel torture in order to gain entry to the Mal society to try to avoid a war with his own.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: Vendanj suffers through his torture, physical and mental, even though he knows the Mal don't intend to give him a fair chance. He feels he has won a victory by introducing the idea of granting mercy to others.

Con: It's very difficult to suspend disbelief for this story. Although there have been plenty of societies that practiced all sorts of cruel initiation rites, it's rather hard to accept one that inflicts so much continual suffering. The shoes with spikes inside were probably the most egregious example. Also, it seems that Vendanj's people have much stronger magic than the Mal, so you'd expect they'd have better ways to retrieve their thousand-fold ingot.
