Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys: The Elephant’s Tale, by Damien Angelica Walters

Apex Magazine, August 2015;  3,500 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story

The elephant laments the sad state of the circus, remembers how much better it once was, and watches those who try to escape.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

The steady decay of the circus fascinates. The progress of the younger twin toward realizing she needs to go keeps us interested, and her insistence that the elephant find freedom with her is uplifting.

We never really get a clue what's supposed to be happening here. Perhaps all the different elements mean something--e.g. the arrival of one, new monkey who has something wrong with him--but, if so, it's too cryptic to figure out.
