In Mexico in 1562, Bienvenida meets an imprisoned Spanish girl her own age, befriends her, and looks for the magic to set her free.
Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)
Pro: Beautifully written, this is a strong piece of historical fiction that reminds us of a terrible injustice. The resolution, in which Anica's spirit is freed, but not her body, is sad but realistic.
Con: It's not 100% clear that there's really a fantasy element here. It's just as easy to interpret that last scene as a hallucination that Anica has.
