Two Turkish sisters struggle to survive in an Alaska ravaged by giant mutant worms.
It's refreshing that this didn't turn out to be a global worm apocalypse. It's an ecological disaster, but not an apocalypse. The story of Aliye's desire to walk again, even at the price of shortening her life, is poignant.
There's no such thing as polio reinfection--not from the same strain as the original infection. Although Hafsa is the narrator, this really isn't her story--it's Aliye's--and we don't ever feel close to Hafsa. In fact, we don't really bond with any of the characters.
