Elephants and Corpses, by Kameron Hurley

Tor.com, May 13, 2015; 6,828 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story  Recommended By: io9

Nev can jump to bodies of the freshly dead, or to bodies he keeps on ice, but his latest acquisition causes no end of trouble.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: Somewhat grisly concept, but done well. Great description of him bringing a dead body back to life. Cool discovery at the end that a body's soul only survives death if someone loves it.

Con: The tale feels a bit unfinished. The Temple is just going to come after them again. It's also a little odd that Tera didn't say "hey, this is my sister" right at the start.

The Light Brigade, by Kameron Hurley

Lightspeed Magazine, November 2015; 5,283words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story

The narrator is a soldier in a far-future army that transports soldiers by turning them into beams of light. But he has funny visions when he's a light beam, and he's starting to question the whole war.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: There really is a story arc here. Our hero starts off wanting to "be on the side of light." By the end, he achieves that. The story makes ruined Earth seem very real. It's cute that the "aliens" turn out to just be other human beings who lived apart for a few centuries.

Con: "The Corporations" are a paper villain, and the political message is stronger than it ought to be. It's not at all clear why it's worth transmitting ordinary soldiers as beams of light. Why wouldn't you send robots?
