If you haven’t read any of the Wild-Cards series, this story may be hard to make sense of. In particular, it wraps up loose ends from the novel “Black Trump,” so readers who haven’t read that may not get as much out of this one.

Pro: The framing story is mildly interesting, but the core is the story of how Zoe Harris found redemption by raising Croyd and Rima’s child. Along the way, there’s a decent amount of excitement and suspense.
Con: If you’re not really familiar with the Wild Cards universe, this story is likely to seem really weak. Worse, you could remove everyone’s super powers and still have essentially the same story, so it’s barely genre.
