★★★☆☆ Average

(Dystopia; Autonomous) A young man enjoys his life in 22nd-Century Canada, but he’s anxious that no one find out he used to be a slave. (5,395 words; Time: 17m)

This isn’t a story so much as a “taster” to introduce you to the world of the author’s Autonomous series. If it piques your interest, you should look into the novels that are set in this world.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Review: 2019.138 (A Word for Authors)

Pro: It’s a good teaser for “Autonomous,” since it gives us just enough of a taste of the world to make us curious how it all works.

John is a likeable character who’s had a really bad time and who keeps fighting. It’s hard not to wish him well.

Con: There’s no story here. This is an almost pure vignette.
