★★★☆☆ Just a Taste of a Larger Work
(Steampunk; Harry and Marlowe) In an alternate World War I, Lieutenant Marlowe works in a British lab developing รtherian technology that might help win the war when a visit from royalty changes his world completely. (5,596 words; Time: 18m)
This is a taster for the larger “Harry and Marlowe” series. Worth a read to see if you might like the rest.
"Marlowe and Harry and the Disinclined Laboratory," by Carrie Vaughn [bio] (edited by John Joseph Adams), appeared in Lightspeed Magazine issue 105, published on February 1, 2019.

Review: 2019.091 (A Word for Authors)
Pro: This sketch gives us a good feel for what sort of people Marlowe and Harry are and what sort of world they live in. In particular, it gives a fairly good idea of what the รtherian technology (which will be so important in all the stories) is capable of.
Con: There’s no plot to speak of. Marlowe has no real goal and does very little; things just happen.
