(Time Travel; Veritas) When President Gerald Ford announces the arrival of a time traveler, America changes in lots of ways, and Jason’s family will never be the same. (25,718 words; Time: 1h:25m)
Although this is technically part of a series, the connection with the other stories is limited to the idea: there are no shared characters, no shared events, and no shared settings.
"The Esteemed," by Robert Reed [bio] (edited by Sheila Williams), appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction issue 01-02|19, published on December 15, 2018 by Penny Publications.

Review: 2019.022 (A Word for Authors)
Pro: The charm of the story is figuring out what’s actually going on. Discovering what Mahlon’s real motives were in coming back to 1975 and what’s really been going on. It’s also fun to read about how differently the last 40 years might have gone.
Con: I never managed to relate to any of the characters, which took much of the fun out of the story for me.
