★★★☆☆ Average
(Fantasy Adventure; The Eternal Sky) Bijou the Artificer hunts for whoever is making poor-quality animations and passing them off as her work. (7,907 words; Time: 26m)
Although there are several novels and at least one other short story in the series, there’s no need to read any of them to enjoy this story, and it’s unlikely that reading this story first will spoil the rest
"No Work of Mine," by Elizabeth Bear [bio] (edited by Gardner Dozois), appeared in The Book of Magic (RSR review), published on October 16, 2018 by Bantam Books.

Review: 2018.647 (A Word for Authors)
Pro: The wild-goose chase around the city introduces us to colorful people and places. The big confrontation with the swarms of birds is suitably tense and exciting.
Con: It ends abruptly. We have no idea how Bijou figured out to talk to Najma, who was only mentioned in passing near the start of the story.
