The Anchorite Wakes, by R.S.A. Garcia

[Clarkesworld]
★★★☆☆ Average

(SFF) Sister Nadine sits in her cell at the church and offers wisdom to any of the townspeople who come by. But she’s starting to see things that suggest the world isn’t quite what it seems to be. (4,395 words; Time: 14m)

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: Nadine finally learns the real structure of her world and she escapes from the “church.”

Con: Nadine doesn’t do any of this for herself; Louisa makes it all happen.

It’s not clear why Louisa would want to “free” Nadine. Once she realized Nadine was a program that sent townspeople to die every year, you’d think she’d disable it, not try to be friends with it.
