(Apocalypse) Some obsolete sentient robots hide near a nuclear furnace to avoid being recycled, but one of them goes out to hunt for spare parts, risking exposure. (4,650 words; Time: 15m)
Although there are references to the play, "R.U.R.," there's no need to read it first.
"R.U.R-8?," by Suzanne Palmer [bio] (edited by Sheila Williams), appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction issue 09-10|18, published on August 16, 2018 by Penny Publications.
Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)
Pro: Stout loses his old, unworthy friends, but he finds a new one and a new purpose.
Con: It’s a rather ignominious apocalypse, and I don’t hold out any hope for the robots without the resources of the city to support them.
