My impression was definitely time travel and future utopia. People from before whatever brought about the long-time peace make brief restorative visits and then return to the fight. The boy is the poet whose work was recited at the funeral of the woman's wife.
ReplyDeleteThis story has the "Prefect Dreyfus" label instead of Alastair Reynold's Open and Shut.

DeleteJust pointing out a correction for you. This review post has the "Prefect Dreyfus" label and the review of Reynold's story doesn't.
DeleteAh! NOW I get it! Oops. We'll fix that in the next day or two.
DeleteThanks!
Thanks, fixed in both reviews. It was a copy-paste error between adjacent rows in the spreadsheet.
