In Everlasting Wisdom, by Aliette de Bodard

★★★☆☆ Average

(Military SF) Ai Thi serves the Everlasting Emperor by using the appeaser within her to calm people around her telepathically. Wartime shortages are making her job harder and harder. (5,768 words; Time: 19m)

Review: 2017.071 (A Word for Authors)

Pro: Ai Thi gets back in touch with her own humanity via her contact with Hoa. As a result, she manages to save at least some lives by rejecting her boss’s orders to fight to the death.

Con: Ai Thi is a very passive protagonist for the most part, and it’s not at all clear that her act at the end will really make any difference.
