Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)
Pro: The story contains several interesting basic ideas: custom brain modifications, much older parents of young children, etc.
Con: Vera is such an unlikable character, it makes the story unpleasant to read. On top of that, too many unbelievable episodes mar the story. For example, when the government decides her father misrepresented the quality of his research, rather than just cut off his support, they burn all his files. And Vera’s enhancement not only lets her smell people’s illnesses, it magically lets her diagnose them too.
