(Historical Fantasy) In 1588, Filippo needs the shape-shifter codex he left with a friend, who should have known better than to try to use the codex by himself. (6,107 words; Time: 20m)

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)
Pro: A cute little tale, revolving around Filippo’s efforts to save his friend and, at the same time, learn a bit more about the codex itself. It speaks well of Filippo that he’s not too proud to take advice from his student, Luca.
Con: the story has too many infodumps to be a smooth read. It feels like a small part of a much larger work.

While it stood on its own, the world-building felt too elaborate for a one off. Sure enough it's part of The Elect series:

One other appears to be available online in its entirety:

(BTW, it looks like the "Con" section is missing. I imagine there is one for a 3-star story.)
Thanks! I accidentally failed to paste the whole review somehow. It's fixed.
DeleteThanks for the other links.
