Pro: Beth wants to create a monument that will memorialize her and Keiji’s love forever—a love that their friends and relatives at first disparaged and later were unable to see. While he lived, he wanted his love for her to be a private thing, but with him gone, she wants to shout it to the world, so loudly that it will echo down the halls of time. From the various quotes out of future articles, we see that she succeeded.
Con: Other than the quotes from the future, the story is entirely mainstream.
There's no plausible way Kansas will be below sea level (or even covered by a lake) in the next 700 years.

At the risk of just agreeing with you, I agree with you. A very moving story but the SF element is slight at best.
