Pro: The story is at its best when it describes Gwen and her son working together. It manages to convey how she loves her son (which makes his loss all the more tragic) and give us a feel for the environment too.

Con: The narrator's endless editorializing makes the story painful to read. The lack of any clue why the baseline humans are upset with the modified ones is also a problem, as is the ease with which the family splits in two at the end despite having had no prior discussion about that. In real life, they'd have all stayed.
