(High Fantasy; Varekai) The locals summoned her to get blood from the Lhian's cauldron, but she has no idea who that is. Or even who she herself is. (21,601 words; Time: 1h:12m)
Rating: ★★★☆☆ Average
This is the first in a series of adventures, but this story is quite complete by itself. See related articles on Tor.com.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)
Pro: Good dialog and narrative. Plenty of tension. Nice character building. Dramatic confrontation with the Lhian at the end.
I had suspected that Ree was going to turn out to actually be the Lhian, but I was pleased to be wrong. I'm interested to hear what the next adventure entails.
Con: This is pretty much the setup for a series of adventures, so it leaves a couple of crucial questions unanswered. In particular, what did Ree surrender to the Lhian?
In isolation, the Lhian's deal with Ree just seems too easy.
