Pro: There's a good bit of tension while we wait to discover what the disaster is or whether Melanie's mother has just lost her mind.
Con: We can't believe that all the leaders of the world decided to destroy the whole planet just to get rid of one minority group.

I felt this was left too mysterious to make sense of the situation. Not sure how that could be resolved due to the young POV or without losing the tension.
