Twelve and Tag, by Gregory Norman Bossert

Asimov's Science Fiction, March 2015; ~9,000 words
Rating: 4, Recommended

At the end of the 21st Century, the crew of Tethys initiates a pair of new crew members via a story-telling game. Chilling.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: There are few wasted words here. Cheung's story gives us all the background on this universe and introduces us to the key characters. It's a chilling moment when you realize that Zandt's story is a different side of Adra's. And that we have witnessed Zandt's second story, not just heard it.

Con: It's not clear why Zandt waited until the story to attack Adra--other than being stupid. Not sure why he had a limp. And never understood the point of the twelve and tag word game.

  1. An average story for me, didn’t feel the story has any stake and didn’t pick up right until the end when you realize Zandt’s story is connected to Adra then I felt it just ended too quickly
