Red Planet, by Caroline M. Yoachim

Lightspeed Magazine, February 2015; 1,926 words
Rating: 1, Improvement needed

Tara's lover is leaving for Mars. Tara cannot follow because of her blindness, but then she gets an option to try a new treatment.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: Tara does get to go to Mars.

Con: The story is almost pure narration. We are never shown Tara's emotional reactions--we are told what they are. It's like reading the outline of a story rather than the story itself. The big idea of the story--that a blind woman rejects the gift of sight because she'd rather be blind--is simply impossible to believe. It makes her seem ungrateful and undeserving.
