Military Secrets, by Kit Reed

Asimov's Science Fiction, March 2015; ~3,100 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story  Recommended By:   SFRevu:4

When the Navy reports Jessie's father is missing-in-action, life at school becomes very strange. Surreal.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: A clear allegory of how not knowing if a person is dead or alive prevents you from ever finding closure.

Con: This barely qualifies as having any speculative element. There is no actual "what if" here.

  1. Not sure what’s going on here… Story is not too bad but I too felt that it doesn’t exactly fit for Asimov magazine and doesn’t feel like science fiction. Nowadays this story will be great on Uncanny.
