Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)
Pro: Nice arc from hard-working, frustrated crewmember to respected scientist. She gets what she wants, and it feels she has earned it. Nice too that the author doesn't make her captain out to be a bad guy.
Con: We're told that the expedition was underfunded, so it's impossible to believe that they suddenly found the money to hire someone new. Hiring someone with a scientific background but no real experience (other than menial) seems like a very impulsive thing to do.
