The Body Pirate, Van Aaron Hughes

Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July/August 2015; 9,078 words

Symbiotic intelligences combining a bird-like entity with a humanoid one suffer problems when progress allows each bird to control multiple humanoids.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Even though you want to root for the humans to break free from the birds, it's impossible not to feel for Adela's terrible loss. Without a single scene set in the past, you still feel the horror the original human colonists must have experienced. By the end of the story, all the pieces fit together.

The first few paragraphs are very confusing because we're unfamiliar with how these multi-bodied creatures communicate.

Lois Tilton gave this one of her rare recommendations.
