Four Seasons in the Forest of Your Mind, by Caroline M. Yoachim

The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, May/June 2015; 2,320 words
Rating: 3, Good, ordinary, story

A very alien sort of aliens have a very different sort of first contact with humanity.

Mini-Review (click to view--possible spoilers)

Pro: A chilling story--even with no named characters--as we watch the aliens controlling and then destroying their human hosts. The ending leaves us begging the human ship not to land. Nicely done.

Con: There are no characters and no actual plot, but this particular type of short story has a long tradition in SF, so that's actually okay. On reflection, one wonders why the alien civilizations who quarantined this planet didn't simply sterilize it. Or why the aliens didn't bide their time and wait until the larger colony arrived.
