Reference

The magazine tables below contain links to obtain issues in digital or print format from a library or by purchase.

Library access to digital issues, if available, consists of three types: (1) free access at the magazine’s website for reading in a browser; (2) free access to a public library which subscribes to a reference database containing the magazine, for reading in a browser; and (3) paid access to a private library with the magazine, for reading in an eReader device or Reader app.

Purchase of digital issues requires (1) an eReader device or installation of a Reader app on your tablet, smartphone, desktop, or laptop, followed by (2) clicking a purchase link in the magazine table and buying the issue at the bookstore’s website, then (3) sending the issue to the device for reading. Sometimes, the website (such as Google Play Newsstand) only shows a subset of the available back issues, in which case you have to browse the back issues in the app itself to see the full set and do an in-app purchase.

Analog Science Fiction & Fact

The digital current issue is available for in-app purchase from all three eReaders and five Reader apps, but back issues are only available from Kobo (eReader and app), Magzter, and Google Play Newsstand. Desktop/laptop users can use Magzter’s web reader or the public library to read back issues.

Public Library Access

1.       Go to your local library system’s website and do a catalog search for the desired magazine.

2.       If the results show a print copy, click it to see which library location(s) carry the magazine.

3.       If the results show a digital copy, click it to see one or more links to research databases that carry the full text of the magazine (note that some are accessible only from a library computer and not from home). Clicking on a database link will prompt you to enter your library card and PIN, after which the magazine’s issues are available. Bookmark the page for future reference.

4.       If the results show nothing, browse the library system’s website for its collection of research databases and see if it includes General OneFile, MasterFILE Premier or ProQuest Research (typically under magazines and newspapers). If so, clicking on a database link will prompt you to enter your library card and PIN, after which you can do a periodical search for the magazine and access the issues. Bookmark the page for future reference.

The table below is a shortcut to the library systems of some of the largest metropolitan areas in the US. Links 1-5 are catalog searches or links to research databases (blank cell means not yet looked up).

eReader Devices & Reader Apps

To choose an eReader device or Reader app for the eMagazine you wish to read, (1) use the blue table to see which app(s) support the eMagazine, then (2) use the green table to click the purchase link for an eReader device or an installation link for a Reader app for your tablet, smartphone, desktop, or laptop’s operating system.

The blue table’s cells show a Yes/No pair where the first Yes/No indicates if the current issue is available (individual or subscription) and the second Yes/No indicates if back issues are available. In some cases, back issues are available as eBooks rather than eMagazines (noted with *). The difference between the two is that some Reader apps limit eMagazine support to tablets and smartphones, whereas Reader apps support eBooks on all devices including desktops and laptops.

The green table’s cells show a Yes/No pair where the first Yes/No indicates if the Reader app supports eMagazines on the device/OS and the second Yes/No indicates if the Reader app supports eBooks on the device/OS.

If you have a choice of more than one Reader app for an eMagazine, follow this link to learn how magazine formating and navigation is done in each app so you can choose one that works best with your device/OS.
