Pro: I was an expat in Japan, so much of Berta’s experience resonates with me. On the one hand, you look down on your totally unassimilated countrymen who seem clumsy and clueless, but on the other hand, you get a daily reminder of your own inadequacy. Transition is far more alien than Tokyo, so Betra’s challenge really is insuperable.
Con: This is a vignette so it has no plot by design, but the setting seemed rather dull to me, and the descriptions were needlessly confusing.
